Teaching Assistant Program
Overview Year 1
Our Assistant Instructor Course is the perfect way for skers and riders to prepare to become certified instructors. The course is designed to help participants to improve technically while developing solid communication and interpersonal skills. After completing the course, participants will take part in our 5 week Teaching Apprentice program. Participants will work closely with certified instructors, assisting with actual classes. Here they will develop an eye for assessing and developing students while building a "teaching toolbox." Apprentices can also partake in weekly on snow sessions with certified trainers to further their skills. After completing the apprentice program, some participants will be selected for a position as a Teaching Assistant.

TA Responsibility And Commitment
Step 1 - Assistant Instructor Course
Candidates must complete the mandatory 3 day training course December 27-29. Certified trainers will provide indoor and on snow instruction to improve technique, introduce teaching tactics and improve professionalism. An on going evaluation of ski/board performance, teaching skills, and attitude will be conducted. Performance appraisals will be given on December 29 and candidates will move on to the 5 week Teaching Apprentice program beginning January 4th or 5th.
Step 2 - Teaching Apprentice
Teaching Apprentices will assist a certified instructor with teaching a 5 week program. The apprentice must commit to 2 hours (10:30am -11:30am and 2pm-3pm) beginning Saturday January 4th or Sunday January 5th for the duration of 5 weeks. Apprentices will work closely with the instructor, gaining real, hands on experience. Apprentices will be evaluated at the end of each class by the instructor.
Additional complimentary training sessions will be offered Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9:30am to help candidates enhance their skills.
Upon completing the 5 week apprentice training, candidates will be re-evaluated and may be selected to become a Teaching Assistant.
Step 3 - Teaching Assistant
Teaching Assistants will be scheduled to assist with 5 week programs, Discover Ski/Board classes, and March Break programs based on availability on an as needed basis.
Although Teaching Assistants who assist after the initial 5 week apprentice training are considered 'volunteers' not 'workers', they will receive on going quality training, a discounted season pass and discounts in our cafeteria and retail shop when working, and will be paid for every teaching hour assigned in one lump sum payment at the end of the season. TA’s also have priority placement for other work at Mount Pakenham.
2nd & 3rd Year TA’s
Returning TA’s must participate in the 2-day Assistant Instructor Course for returning TA’s-Dec 28-29 from 10:00-12:00-1:00-3. Participants will be evaluated at the end of course. Successful candidates will be considered for paid work for the 10 weeks of weekend programs and holiday programs. Based on the evaluations, some candidates may have to participate in the 5 weeks of apprentice training before being considered for paid work.
